Wouter "Wally" De Backer, born May 21, 1980, known by his stage name Gotye (/ˈɡoʊtiː/ GOH-tee), is a Belgian-Australian musician, multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. The name "Gotye" is a phonetic rewriting of "Gaultier", which is the intention of his mother for the pronunciation. De Backer is a member of the indie pop trio The Basics, who have independently released three studio albums and numerous other tracks since 2002.
